July 14, 2023

The Australian Opal Centre Ltd has appointed Barpa Construction Services to construct Stage 1 of the Australian Opal Centre at its site on Yuwaalaraay country at Lightning Ridge, NSW after a rigorous competitive tender process.

This amazing nationally-significant museum, designed by acclaimed architect Wendy Lewin in association with Dunn + Hillam architects, will be an energy-efficient, two storey underground building, filled with glittering treasures and stories of the people who found them.

The Barpa team is committed to helping realise the vision for the new Australian Opal Centre which will incorporate a Museum and multipurpose facility to be used for educational training, scientific research and for tourism.

Barpa will mobilise to the AOC site over the next few weeks and will be active in the community as they seek to finalise local supply and trade sub-contract arrangements.

Stage 1 of the new Australian Opal Centre is expected to be completed in 2024. This will be a significant milestone for Lightning Ridge and Walgett Shire, as well as the wider Australian and global opal and gemstone communities and the people, communities and visitor economy of inland Australia.
