Barpa has successfully completed the $25 million Broken Hill Hospital Redevelopment for NSW Health Infrastructure, delivered under a GC21 Design and Construct contract in partnership with Far West Local Health District.
The project comprised two major components: the new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit and the staged upgrade of the Emergency Department, both delivered within the live hospital environment.
The new Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit provides modern, culturally safe mental health facilities tailored to the needs of a remote community. The unit includes eight single inpatient rooms with private ensuites, communal lounge and dining areas, sensory and activity spaces, an outdoor courtyard, discreet entry, and landscaping inspired by Aboriginal culture and connection to Country. Locally selected artwork has also been integrated to create a welcoming and therapeutic environment.
The Emergency Department upgrade provides a larger, more efficient urgent care facility, including full internal refurbishment and reconfiguration, tailored treatment spaces for children and mental health presentations, and a new dedicated external entry with a light-filled waiting area. The final stage was handed over on 10 December 2025.
Indigenous engagement was embedded throughout the project. A Smoking Ceremony marked commencement of works, and Barpa engaged a number of Indigenous businesses to undertake the works.
Delivering the redevelopment within an operational regional hospital required careful staging, stakeholder coordination and a strong focus on safety, access and continuity of care.
The successful completion of this project reflects Barpa’s growing health sector capability and our commitment to delivering infrastructure that supports access to care, cultural safety, wellbeing and dignity for regional and remote communities.
